About the Event
E(x)cape is an immersive escape room experience that combines statistical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and analytical thinking. Teams of 2 will navigate through three progressively challenging rounds, starting with a quiz, moving through an intense escape room scenario, and culminating in a regression problem. You have 2 hours to prove your data prowess and escape the challenges that lie ahead!
Event Structure
Mode: Offline
Duration: 2 hours total
Team Size: 2 members per team
Rounds: 3 progressive rounds (Quiz → Escape Room → Regression)
Round 1: Quiz Challenge
Kick off the event with a knowledge-testing quiz covering statistics, data science concepts, and analytical reasoning. This round evaluates your foundational understanding and quick thinking.
- Multiple choice and short answer questions
- Topics include probability, statistics, data analysis, and logical reasoning
- Time-bound challenge to test speed and accuracy
- Top-performing teams advance to the escape room
Round 2: Escape Room
Enter the E(x)cape room! Teams face a series of data-driven puzzles, cryptic clues, and statistical challenges that must be solved to "escape." Use your analytical skills, pattern recognition, and teamwork to unlock each stage.
- Physical and mental challenges involving data interpretation
- Decode clues hidden in datasets, graphs, and statistical outputs
- Solve puzzles using logical reasoning and mathematical concepts
- Time pressure adds intensity—work efficiently with your partner
- Successfully escaping qualifies you for the final round
Round 3: Regression Problem
The ultimate test! Teams are presented with a real-world regression problem. Analyze the dataset, identify relationships, build a model, and interpret results—all within the time limit.
- Given a dataset and problem statement related to regression analysis
- Perform exploratory data analysis to understand variable relationships
- Build and validate a regression model
- Interpret coefficients, p-values, and model fit statistics
- Present conclusions and predictions based on your analysis
- Judged on accuracy, methodology, and interpretation
Rules & Guidelines
- Teams must consist of exactly 2 members
- Total event duration: 2 hours across all three rounds
- Event is offline—all activities take place on campus
- Calculators and basic stationery allowed (no smartphones or laptops in escape room)
- Teams must progress sequentially through rounds—cannot skip ahead
- All team members must participate actively in each round
- Hints may be provided in the escape room, but may incur time penalties
- Maintain integrity—no external assistance or collaboration with other teams
- Judges' decisions are final
Evaluation Criteria
- Quiz Performance: Accuracy and speed in answering questions
- Escape Room: Time taken to solve puzzles, number of hints used, problem-solving approach
- Regression Analysis: Model accuracy, statistical interpretation, methodology, and presentation
- Overall Time: Total time taken across all three rounds (tiebreaker)
